Freediving for Beginners with Seven Seas

Freediving Have you ever thought about how much time it takes to get a good look at a critter? Or how long it takes to soak up an underwater scenery? If you look at your watch, and see how one minute ticks away, you will agree that one minute may be all you need...

Enter freediving, also known as breath-hold or apnea diving. No longer just a euphemism for spearfishing, freediving is embraced by an increasing number of enthusiasts who want to experience the 'deep blue' without the 'great drag'. Whereas professionals dive without aids to 60 m and deeper, holding their breath for over four minutes, anybody who is physically fit can learn to freedive to 10 m, staying underwater for one minute, without feeling an overwhelming urge to return to the surface. In fact, humans have a physiological adaptation to immersion called the diving response - this diving response gets more pronounced with practice, so you could say that humans are made to freedive. All it takes is a bit of training, a relaxed mind, and a body that has had time to recover from the strains of every day life. And clear blue water, of course.

Seven Seas is all about clear, blue water, exquisite reefs, and comfort. Fully equipped for SCUBA on air or nitrox, Seven Seas is proud to offer this other side of the underwater sports range as well. In a 7-day freedive seminar for beginners, experienced freedivers will teach you how to control your breathing, and how to get down and back up again.
Depending on the size of the group, at least one tender will be dedicated to freediving. During this seminar, you will experience the underwater world as you have never done so before. Rather than your own breathing, you will hear the music of the reef itself. Sea turtles take a sympathetic interest in your presence, and instead of shying away, fish come to check you out. At the end of the day, you will feel revitalized, instead of worn out from coping with excess nitrogen. As you spend more time holding your breath, you become more conscious of your body. Many beginning freedivers start noticing more clearly how the metabolism reacts to eating, and for some aficionados, freediving was a first step towards a healthier life style.

Freediving For those who want to get the full health benefit, Seven Seas will serve meals that are high in vegetables and fruits, and low on protein and fat. Don't worry - Seven Seas wouldn't be Seven Seas if they wouldn't keep a stash of steaks, French fries, and chocolate fudge for those who insist...

Note that this freedive seminar is not about performance (longest, deepest ...). It is about enjoyment and appreciation of underwater life in its simplest, purest form. For safety reasons, we recommend participating freedivers do not go deeper than 15 m, and do not exceed a one-minute breath-hold time. For large groups (at least 10 pax), we offer advanced freedive trips - further information on request.

Details

Destination - Raja Ampat or Komodo National Park. The selection of dive sites will be adapted to the needs of freedivers and snorkelers.

Scheduling - Seven Seas is among the first to offer freedive trips in Indonesia. Scheduling depends on the preference of confirmed participants. Please advise us of your interest, and we will inform you of the next available freedive trips as soon as possible.

Gear - we recommend a 3 mm wetsuit, a low-volume divemask of black (not transparent) silicone, a snorkel of the open J-type without frills, thin neoprene socks, and full-foot freedive fins. A dive watch and wrist-mount depth gauge completes a basic freedive set, but if you are serious about freediving you may want to consider taking a freedive computer such as the Suunto D3. All gear is available for rent, but please inform us of your shoe size so that we can bring fitting freedive fins. Seven Seas will arrange safety equipment.

Skills - you need to be a good swimmer and you need to be in good health. Freediving is not recommended for those who frequently have problems with their ears and sinuses. SCUBA certification is, of course, not required for freediving.

Other activities - SCUBA diving remains an option, but note that SCUBA and freediving cannot be combined on the same day for safety reasons. Spearfishers should bring their own gear. Please note that Seven Seas does not offer spearfishing for reef fish (groupers, snappers, emperors, parrotfish, wrasses, etc.), and that we expect spearfishers to limit their catch to two pelagic fish per day, on any one day (your unused one-day quota cannot be added to another day's quota). Spearfishing is not allowed inside the Komodo National Park, but spearfishing excursions to areas outside the Park will be organized on request. Kayaks, waterskiing, and fishing gear are available.
