Sad news - passing away of an icon of Underwater Indonesian Adventures

Sunday March 25 saw the cremation of Larry Smith, one of the most inspiring people in the dive world. Larry passed away unexpectedly and leaves behind his wife Dewi And daughter Breezy and many many terribly sad people who had the opportunity to dive with him and learn to see the amazing underwater world through his eyes, enjoying muck diving, critter diving and the beauty of underwater Indonesia at any time of the year at any place where Larry would jump in the water. Many tributes have been posted on many websites and we strongly encourange you to read some of the memories posted on wetpixel.com/i.php/full/larry-smith.
Larry, so many people miss you!

It feels strange to carry on with normal business after this. The schedule for 2007 is almost fully booked and we are already starting to take 2008 bookings. Some cruises are still available, but many have enquiries also already. Please check the table and contact us quickly if you still want to get underwater this 2007 season! Stew Esposito's report

For those of you who have had the fun of diving with Stew when he was onboard cruise director, please join us wishing him a great season back home in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he will be opening his community pool again for the summer season [email protected]. We look much forward to Stew returning next year for another season onboard Seven Seas together with our crew, guiding the guests through some of the best sites of eastern Indonesia.

Stew: "It was great to join Seven Seas for this season, I met some great people and had fun working with the Seven Seas team. The diving was fantastic and the other adventures in Banda and Raja Ampat were really special. I enjoyed also the snorkeling with clients a lot, much of my best underwater footage I actually shot hovering over reefs, snorkeling in shallow water. I look much forward to coming back next year."

Shark tales

At least 20 new species have been discovered in the first comprehensive survey of Indonesia's sharks and rays since the 1850s. A team of scientists from CSIRO reports that the information comes from a 5 year long survey of shark catches at fish markets in Indonesia, which is of course indicative of the importance sharks play in Indonesian fisheries these days. Please see the full reference via www.csiro.au/news/ps2tv.html.

In a report that just came out from TRAFFIC, Indonesia scores an unfortunate first place on the list of the world's largest shark product producers. Check out this report via www.traffic.org/content/747.pdf.

Conservation

Helen Newman just reported that the Komodo mooring buoy project has been successfully completed. Helen and some park staff and volunteers installed 14 big boat moorings (including 2 replacements) and an additional small boat mooring. Overall the project has installed or replaced 21 big boat moorings and 11 small boat moorings (2 more than scheduled!). She has made a final report which gives all the GPS locations for the new moorings. Please download it via www.komodonationalpark.org/mooring/mooring0.htm.
