The Seven Seas News - September 2016
Komodo National Park, August 2016
Trip Report and photos by Fabien Michenet & Sylvain Girardot.
Just returned from a 12 day cruise in August in the Komodo Marine Park aboard Seven Seas.
We were blessed with ideal conditions to explore the shores and reefs of the Komodo National Park, with sunny weather and beautiful seas during the whole stay.
The facilities on board the Seven Seas are top-notch: the cabins are very comfortable, air-conditioned with ensuite bathrooms and always attentive crew. The excellent, varied meals are prepared by the new Chef, Totok, and introduce you to the flavors of Indonesia.
This cruise was really the most varied and most attractive we've had the opportunity to do, the dives being original and complementary.
The route chosen by Karl and Linda allowed us to dive a variety of sites in the Northern crystal waters, as well as in the fresher Southern waters, equally rich in life.
Karl and our 2 guides, Jeffry & Irwan, have extensive experience of the dive sites, which they have acquired over the years, a very important point in order to enjoy every dive in safety, as the currents can be strong and change in minutes. These currents loaded with nutrients are the foundation of the food chain for fish and millions of marine animals in the park. In this profusion of life, the eyes of our guides are indispensable to fully discover the biodiversity of each dive site.
As photographers, we also like night diving. With the possibility to dive each night, on carefully chosen sites (black sand, seagrass, etc.) these dives far exceeded our expectations. Each outing is the opportunity to closely observe colorful nudibranchs, many cephalopods: bobtail squid, flamboyant cuttlefish or big-finned squid that move in our lights. Or even hairy frogfish and the predatory behavior of strange Bobbit worms nestled in the sand etc...
Land tours are also great, as Karl and Linda are always attentive to their guests' requests, for example we saw the famous Komodo dragons several times in beautiful light, surrounded by monkeys on Rinca Island, before enjoying a deserted beach with a drink at sunset.
